宇佐神宮

The head shrine of all Hachiman Shrines in Japan

There are approximay 110,000 shrines nationwide, and of these more than 40,600 are Hachiman Shrines.  Usa Jingu Shrine is the head shrine to all Hachiman Shrines.

This shrine was built in 725, and Hachiman Okami(God), Hime Okami(God), and the Jingu Kogo(mother God of Hachiman Okami),are all enshrined here as the shrine's deities.

Usa Jingu Shrine is said to be the birthplace of Shinbutsushugo, which is the mixing of the Japanese religion Shinto and the foreign religion Buddhism. The vast shrine grounds are surrounded by lush ancient woods and the air here is clean and crisp.  Along with the main shrine which is a national treasure, there are many other shrines scattered around the premises.

Also, Usa Jingu Shrine is one of the 16 shrines that the Emperor's Envoy is dispatched to during imperial festivals.  In the whole of Kyushu, there are only two such places, Usa Jingu Shrine, and Kashiigu Shrine in Fukuoka prefecture.
